How to make the Halloween Cupcake Costume!

Posted by on Friday, June 20th, 2008

You’ve asked, we got it.

Here are complete instructions on how to make the cupcake costume we featured here. Sent in from Meredith .

I had so much fun figuring out how to make
it, can’t believe I didn’t win the costume contest at work.
Here are my directions:

1. I used a round laundry basket for the inside frame (not as easy to find
as one might think). Believe I found mine at K-Mart. Cut out the bottom and
cut a line down the back to put it on I tied two straps to the top like
suspenders to hold it on my shoulders (the frosting covered those up).

2. I took a stiff board, but not as heavy as cardboard and folded it in 2"
or 3" accordion sections and stapled them together after I made sure I had
enough. When I attached it to the laundry basket I got the inner folds of
the board and punched little holes like a : a few inches from the top and
bottom and used craft wire to connect it to the cross bars of the wash
basket. When I had that part done I spray painted the bottom.

3. for the frosting I got some of that 1/4" flat batting from the craft
store. I hot glued the first layer onto the basket rim and top of the
cupcake liner. Then I believe I used spray glue to glue the rest. Remember
to cut the batting in the same place you have your opening in the back so it
opens for you. I laid it out in sections first then glued it. About 2 layers
into the frosting I didn’t glue on the sides so my arms would fit through. I
marked it on the inside so I knew where my arms would go.

4. I taped off the bottom and spray painted the frosting. And for the
sprinkles I just used plain felt and cut out sprinkles and hot glued them
on. Once I had it on I had someone use a paperclip to clip the top and
bottom of my opening to keep the board closed.

And that is about it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Q-I ran across your website while searching for miniature cupcake boxes for my tiny beaded cupcakes. I’ve been trying to find little miniature boxes to display them in because a cupcake shop in Maryland said they would buy them if they could figure out how to package them.  Any ideas since these are smaller than 1 1/2 inches I can’t seem to find anything.  I would love to have your thoughts.

    The Original Cuppycake Song

    The Original Cuppycake Song

No lip-syncing here folks, This is the REAL DEAL!: The original 1994 video of “The Cuppycake Song” (words and music by Judianna Castle) being recorded by the original artist (their daughter, Amy at age 3 yrs, 10 mo.) in their home studio.

Although there were many takes of the song during the session, this was the one that made it onto their BALLOONS children’s CD and the one which has generated so much interest on the internet.

Since uploading “The Cuppycake Song” to the web in 1996, it has truly taken on a life of it’s own. On You Tube alone, there are currently over 2,000 videos using this song! In the last ten years we have received thousands of unsolicited comments from people of all ages across the US and many countries around the world who have been touched by this simple song and the tiny voice that sings it.

Now at last, you can see the face that goes with the voice. This should finally put to rest the false rumor that the song was sung by Strawberry Shortcake.

You can visit their website at cuppycake.com, view the lyrics, and pick up a cd!

    Cupcakes in Your Car

Posted by on Thursday, March 13th, 2008

I live in Chicago and I see people do a lot of stupid things while driving: apply make up, eat salads, hold conference calls…

I have yet to see anyone attempt to eat a cupcake while driving, but I’m sure it’s coming. Maybe this will help curb temptation for a little while longer. I found this one on Amazon, and I’m hoping it’s available in retail stores because the shipping price is hilarious considering how big an air freshener is.

    Cupcake vs. Machine Gun

Posted by on Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

I think this is a really important discussion, you guys, and our voice as professional cupcakers is seriously underrepresented here.

Who would win in a fight between a cupcake and a machine gun?

What kind of fight is it? Is it a knife fight? Being that a cupcake’s home is the kitchen I think  a cupcake would be more familiar with a knife than a machine gun.

Is it a gun fight? Because well…obviously.

What about a war of words or an arm wrestling match? This is serious brain food, dudes- get on it! It’s Wednesday, we’re in a slump. This is exactly the kind of stimulating conversations we need to be having mid-week.

I look forward to your responses.

    Why the name, Cupcake?

Posted by on Friday, February 22nd, 2008

After winning a contest for an adorable cupcake calendar from CB, I just now realized it had a cute definition of what a cupcake is, on the back.

Cupcakes have been around since the late 18th century. The term “cupcake” is mentioned in E. Leslie’s Receipts of 1828. The name is said to come from the amount of ingredients used to make them – a cup of flour, cup of butter, cup of sugar and also because they were originally baked in tea cups or cup shaped molds.

So technically, a cupcake IS a cupcake without frosting. It’s not the frosting or topping that makes it a “cupcake”. It’s the ingredients.. and how it is baked.

    Wa-la!
