If you’re anything like me, early September is prime “what are we all going to be for Halloween” brainstorming time. Last year I was convinced we would make an amazing version of The Munsters. Me as Lily, my husband is a perfect Herman and if anyone was ever Eddie Munster it’s my son. That never quite panned out, Teno ended up being “baby billionaire” and Tony and I were lucky we managed to get dressed in the morning. So I think my dream of following previously posted advice about making my own cupcake costume is well… pretty much unrealistic. I know we have a lot of crafty mama readers, though, and you’re exactly who I thought of when I saw these instructions on Wondertime for making a kid’s cupcake costume. So gather up your materials and get to work! I want to see done damn adorable photos come Halloween!

a little blurry but still cute.
After John McCain’s frightening announcement of Sarah Palin as his running mate I felt compelled to do something to let people know that although a woman in office will always be a dream of mine- this woman in office is a total nightmare. I was a big Hillary supporter, but that ship has sailed and I’m throwing my support in Obama’s direction. And being your friendly neighborhood baker and destroyer, Obama cupcake toppers are the best way I know how to do that. Use them to raise money for his campaign via bake sales or just use them to raise awareness. Download the .pdf, print them on card stock, glue them to toothpicks and get going! Make sure you send us pictures of your wares, because nothing tastes better than cupcakes and Democracy! (Oh, and I’d like to add that I speak for MYSELF in this post and my political views do not necessarily reflect those of my fellow ATC posters.) Click here to download your Obama toppers!

PUNTA GORDA – One local business owner is raising money for Louisiana hurricane victims in a very unconventional way. But, her contributions are made in a very conventional oven.Owner Cindee Murphy of Pies and Plates hopes to give away thousands of cupcakes this week in return for hurricane relief donations.
"We just have so much empathy for the folks there," says Murphy
Murphy’s business was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004.
"It looked like a tornado had come through, but it was a hurricane," says Murphy.
Later this month, she’ll testify before Congress about creating tax-free disaster funds for owners like herself.
"Having immediate funds available is just critical for us to take care of our staff and business," she says.
Her customers remember her struggle and are supporting her efforts.
"We know too well what the damage occurs when a hurricane comes through ur community," says Claudia Sanchez.
Knowing that someone will be there with sweet relief, makes all the difference.
"The help of everybody in the community that’s what gets you through really, that’s what gets you through," says Sanchez.
You can donate all week at Pies and Plates or through your local American Red Cross chapter.

Aggghhh! Zack Attack! Mark-Paul Gosselaar dropped by this morning to tell us all about his new series Raising the Bar (premiering Monday night), in which he’ll play a public defender with plenty of heart, hair. Mandi’s dutifully compiling a sure-to-be-amusing Mark-Paul Through the Years gallery that’ll post on Monday. Meanwhile, let’s talk about how his awesome TNT publicist (and PopWatch reader — hello again!) Susan brought a dozen obscenely oversized cupcakes for all of us aging Saved by the Bell superfans to graze on. This worked out perfectly, because I’m not allowed to eat obscenely oversized cupcakes unless a dreamy ’90s high school TV icon feeds them to me. What are the odds? Mandi would like to point out how EW’s various awards for “excellence” appropriately serve as a backdrop for a photo of two loons eating cupcakes.
Yesterday, Zack’s impending Attack had a bunch of us attempting to out-Saved by the Bell trivia each other in the hallway. Tim Stack absolutely won, nonchalantly name-dropping the duck killed by the oil spill near Bayside’s football field in an emotionally charged impression of Zack Morris cradling said duck: “Don’t worry, Becky. You’re where the oil can’t hurt you now.”
Dear lord. What’s the weirdest thing you remember from SBTB?

They are just a dollar each, and I’ve given work friends the strawberry and vanilla, which they love. I love the coconut”

(NewsUSA) –

Doctors have not declared cupcakes all-you-can-eat health foods.
But these cupcakes from the Oregon Raspberry & Blackberry Council contain protein (peanut butter) and antioxidants (berry jam), making them a better choice for bake sales.
Peanut Butter & Blackberry Jam Cupcakes
Makes 16 cupcakes
Cupcakes:
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 cups milk
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/4 cups sugar
1/2 cup canola oil
1 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Line 16 muffin cups with cupcake liners. Mix the vinegar with the milk and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, stir the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In another mixing bowl, whisk the milk mixture, canola oil, vanilla and almond extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and beat until smooth.
Fill each muffin cup with 1/4 cup of batter. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, until toothpicks come out clean. Remove from the oven. Cool completely.
Peanut Butter Frosting:
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup smooth peanut butter
1 (8 ounce) package of cream cheese, at room temperature
4 cups of confectioner’s sugar
1 tablespoon cream
Beat the butter, peanut butter and cream cheese with a hand or standing mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Slowly add the confectioner’s sugar and continue to mix until the frosting is smooth, mix in the cream and continue to mix until it reaches a good spreading consistency.
To assemble:
1 cup marionberry or blackberry jam
With a sharp paring knife, cut a cone-shaped hole into the top of each cupcake. Cut the cone portion off, leaving only a top cap. Spoon approximately one tablespoon of jam into each cupcake. Replace top.
Frost with peanut butter frosting, using a large (5/8” opening) star tip and a pastry bag. Swirl tops. Place one fresh blackberry on each cupcake.

CUPCAKES ARE HOTTER THAN HOTCAKES: and red velvet tops my list…

How wonderful to open this month’s Bon Appetit to find Buttersweet Bakery in Hapeville featured.
The little bakery that could, Buttersweet owner Charlita Varner’s Key lime cupcake with cream cheese frosting is featured in a piece that’s all about the best of the bake shops across the United States. Atlanta is home to lots of “cupcakeries,” where smallish is best and flavors from funky monkey to plain old vanilla will make every day seem like your birthday.
Here are five spots that bake up cupcakes better than best:
Buttersweet Bakery’s red velvet cupcake is the moistest, reddest, most luscious version of this Southern favorite ever.
Little Cake Bakery in Buckhead’s chocolate cupcake with sweet chocolate frosting has the old-fashioned buttery goodness of something homemade, but with pretty, fat swirls of chocolate frosting and fairy-like sprinkles.
Sweet Pockets Cupcakes’ (Old Fourth Ward) lemon cupcake with velvety lemon frosting is a hands-down best alternative to chocolate and vanilla.
Atlanta Cupcake Factory makes a mean “sugar cookie dulce de leche” that’s sweet enough to make your teeth hurt. My only complaint about this place is that every time I go by, they’re never open. Dang.
Order Sugar Mama’s toasted coconut cupcake filled with vanilla cream and expect to get a creamy, dreamy sugar rush.
Who bakes your favorite cupcake? (and don’t say your mom…)

I am so jealous I missed out on eating those cupcakes! Before you start feeling too sorry for me, my sister was kind enough to bring me a cupcake magnet.
Congratulations Cupcake Delights!
