It’s not too late to celebrate April Fool’s Day with some Spaghetti and Meatballs cupcakes. Here’s one way to do it, from The Farm Girl: Pipe on noodles using small round icing tip. For meatballs, dunk some Ferrerro Rocher chocolates in raspberry jelly–yum!

Easter Egg Cupcakes

Posted by on Saturday, March 31st, 2012

Easter is my favorite cupcake holiday. You can do anything you want with pastels and you’re good to go–so many options! Plus, I’m kind of obsessed with bunnies. Anyway, here is my first attempt this year. (For the grass, I used Wilton tip 233.) If you try this, I HIGHLY recommend Starburst jelly beans. I don’t even like candy, and these are delicious!

Move Over Sit-In, Make Way for Cupcake-In

Posted by on Wednesday, March 28th, 2012

Have a statement? Want to be heard? How about cupcakes? Fans of the new video game Mass Effect 3 are upset with the ending and want it changed. And they’re asking nicely, by sending 400 cupcakes to Bioware, the game’s creators. The cupcakes will be frosted three different colors, but will all taste the same, to symbolize the similar endings of the three video games in the series. This effort will cost $1005 and everyone who contributes to the cause will also get to send along a note with the cupcakes. It’s like a sugary sweet petition. Click here for the campaign website. The cupcakes will be delivered by Fuss Cupcakes of Edmonton, Alberta.

Operation Cupcake

Posted by on Monday, March 26th, 2012

Be on the lookout for a new Hallmark Channel movie titled Operation Cupcake, starring Dean Cain and Kristy Swanson. The movie preimeres Sunday, June 17th at 8 Eastern. The movie tells the story of an Army dad who suddenly finds himself working in a cupcakery. Apparently, he tries to take a military approach to cupcaking. Hmm…

Oddly enough, there was another movie with the same name, albeit, bearing a colon, Operation: Cupcake, from 2006. I can find no connection between the movies though, except for the well, love of cupcakes.

Cupcake Stand Mixer Cover

Posted by on Monday, March 12th, 2012

My stand mixer gets quite a workout, and doesn’t have much time to collect dust, but I’m still tempted to pick up one of these cute cupcake stand mixer covers from Etsy seller PlayingWithDolls. The covers sell for $18 each and 10% of each sale goes to support Volunteers in Medical Missions, an organization that provides free medical care to people in developing countries.

Easy St. Patrick’s Day Cupcakes

Posted by on Saturday, March 10th, 2012

When I go to an event, people expect me to bring cupcakes. Well, for last night’s event, I was pressed for time, and just didn’t think I had any fondant leprechauns in me. So, I tried to make things simple. I picked up some St. Patrick’s Day cupcake liners at the local craft store. I used a white cake mix (didn’t tell anyone) and some green food coloring for the cupcakes. Then I simply piped on some shamrocks, added some green sparkles for good measure, and called the job done. And guess what? People raved about them! Who would have thought? Happy St. Patty’s Day to me!

Crayon Cupcakes

Posted by on Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

If you have children, then you have crayon scraps. You know, teeny tiny crayon stubs that no one colors with anymore. In our house, sometimes these get eaten by the dog, but if we prevent that from happening, these little crayon scraps pile up in the bottom of the crayon box.

So, what do you do with old crayons? Why, you make cupcakes of course! My kids will happily color with their new “crayon cupcakes,” giving new life to old stubs.

Here’s how:

  1. Sort different colors, or color groups, into separate clean soup cans.
  2. Heat a saucepan of water on the stove.
  3. Gently drop soup cans into the water. Watch closely as the crayons in your can(s) melt.
  4. In the meantime, line your muffin pan with cupcake wrappers.
  5. Carefully pour your colored wax into the cupcake wrappers. You can create cupcakes of solid colors, or layer different colors into each cupcake.
  6. Allow “cupcakes” to harden in pan. There’s no need to bake anything!

When it comes to cupcakes, I’m pretty open-minded. But I was truly horrified when I saw the title “Sushi Cupcakes.” Then I saw the picture. So, because this picture made me laugh aloud, I thought I should share it with you. I dare you to tell your friends you’re bringing sushi cupcakes to the party, and then show up with these:

Birthday cupcakes

This is my new favorite cupcake photo. Ever. Today is Janey the orangutan’s 50th birthday. And of course, she’s celebrating it with a cupcake. She is celebrating at the San Diego Zoo, where she has lived since 1984. She is looking mighty good for 50! Happy Birthday fellow cupcake lover!

The Sugar Shack of Lansing, Michigan

Posted by on Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

I just paid my first (apparently overdue) visit to the Sugar Shack of Lansing, Michigan. Think cupcakes are a fad? This bakery has been a family business for forty years!

Sugar Shack offers a wide and impressive variety of creative cupcakes with a rotating menu. And should someone grow tired of the menu, which would be completely impossible, the menu is completely wiped out and recreated every June 1st. So, though I’ve only paid one visit to the Sugar Shack (so far), I’m confident that no two visits could be the same.

Offerings included the “White Trash Cupcake,” a cupcake packed full of pecans, pretzels, and marshmallows, and iced with fudge frosting, then topped with more pecans, pretzels, and marshmallows, then topped with chocolate and caramel sauce. The cupcake of the day was the Menage a Trois, a cupcake with layers of strawberry and chocolate cake, topped with vanilla frosting and fresh coconut. My co-cupcaker enjoyed the Confetti Cupcake–a bubblegum flavored confetti cake. I was sorry to miss the Root Beer Float Cupcake and the Chocolate Turtle, but am grateful for a reason to go back to Lansing.

Of course, the traditional flavors were there, and I enjoyed a Mint Cookies and Cream cupcake straight from heaven: rich dark chocolate cake topped with perfect mint frosting.

While I was there, I heard another customer ask the baker what his favorite cupcake was, to which he responded, “That’s like me asking you which of your kids is your favorite.”

Seriously, I usually leave a new cupcakery happy and ready to discover the next one. But leaving this cupcakery, I just couldn’t wait until my next visit! These are cupcakes at their best!

Simply Cupcakes of Traverse City

Posted by on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012

I just made my first visit to Northern Michigan’s first and only cupcakery: Simply Cupcakes of Traverse City. What a lovely little spot in downtown Traverse!

An impressively wide selection of offerings included Banana Cream, Peanut Butter Cup, Hint of Mint, and Lemon Love, and while we sampled many, the winner was clearly the (pictured) Bumpy Cupcake: A rich dark chocolate cake stuffed with buttercream (which tasted more like mousse), and topped with homemade chocolate ganache and more buttercream, then dipped in chocolate ganache and finished with a few sprinkles. Holy wow! That cupcake was a meal.

I was impressed with how substantial the cupcakes were. They weren’t dense, but there was certainly something to them! And the frostings were non-traditional and left me wondering about their secret recipe.

The cupcakery itself is also a tantalizing hangout, with a “cupcake room” one can book for special events. Cupcake art hung on the wall, including the beauty below, which could be yours for $3000!

If you’re in the area, Simply Cupcakes is a must-stop for the cupcake-lover!
