Cupcakes and Cartwheels

Posted by on Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

‘Cupcakes and Cartwheels’ is the creative genius of Kimberly Hodges. Hodges, an Asheville, North Carolina native, “infuses happiness into interpretation of everyday objects,” according to Madison Avenue Gifts, where you can find an extensive catalog of her work.

Hodges says of her work,

People tell me that my art makes them happy, and I love to hear that. I feel blessed to be able to develop my talents everyday and to agree my designs with more and more people.
This collection here represents the light, fun, inspiration spirit that I love to surround myself everyday. These colors make me happy. And the designs are fanciful celebrating the freedom that I enjoy as an artist painting to my hearts delight.

What beautiful sentiment! What beautiful art!

Amy Smyth Made It

Posted by on Monday, January 14th, 2008
Today I stumbled across a really fun website Amy Smyth Made It. All of her products are made in the USA and the paper and envelopes are recycled.

She encourages you to “write a freakin’ note” with sophisticated, funky and uncommon stationery. When Amy decided to start a stationery business based on her illustrations it was only natural that the products were going to have attitude. She is from Jersey; her family lives in Philly and her husband is from Brooklyn.

Amy, the owner and designer, of Amy Smyth Made It, has had a love of paper, color and design as long as anyone can remember. As the story goes when she was in her playpen she would be entertained for hours by looking through catalogs and feeling the paper. Yes, you read that correctly- feeling the paper.

Amy Smyth Made It is being recognized by the press and quickly becoming a source for anyone who is looking to express their style, sophistication, and uncommon taste through their stationery.

Inside caption of this card:
Ignore the effects it may have on your butt, and have a Happy Birthday.

Positive Affirmation Cupcakes:

Posted by on Sunday, January 13th, 2008

Today was my mother’s birthday. At the moment funds around our household are a bit limited, and anyway, I wanted to do something for her that went further beyond something I could just buy. All along I had planned on making cupcakes, because that is how I like to celebrate special days. In a spark of inspiration I remembered these beautiful affirmation stones blogger Dancing Mermaid left for her friend (on her birthday) and I knew what I would do. I would create positive affirmation cupcakes for my dear, dear mother. Sustenance for her body and spirit.

And here they are.

Tips and tools:

  • To attain the smooth surface of icing I used a regular store bought can of, vanilla, icing. However, I first melted half of the can in the microwave and then added, spoon by spoon, the remaining unmelted icing from the other half of the can until I reached a consistency that was proper for ‘dipping’ the cupcakes. By dipping I mean just that! I dipped each tiny cake into the bowl of melted icing and then placed it back on the tray to cool and ‘set up.’
  • After the vanilla canvas set up I then wrote the positive affirmations on the cakes with Cake Mate Writing Icing in Classic Colors.
  • While writing on the cupcakes my only tip is GO SLOW. If you go slow and brace your hand you’ll do fine!

Yummmmy!

Sweet root beer goodness.

I’ll take a root beer any day over a Dr. Pepper. Dr. Pepper is made from prunes people. Blach.

Back to Yummmmmy.

I found these beauties on flickr user bitter-sweets. And lo and behold not only does Hannah Kaminsky take beautiful pictures, she is also a blog author and a book author!

Her blog is called BitterSweet, of course.

Her new book is called My Sweet Vegan. Publisher: Fleming Ink; 1st edition (December 3, 2007).

Prepare your taste buds for indulgence as My Sweet Vegan has arrived! Covering virtually every craving, this wonderful full color cookbook is the ultimate sweet tooth solution. You will be amazed and delighted by the diverse range of recipes, including Pumpkin Pecan Pie to deliver holiday cheer, Butterscotch Blondies to brighten lunchboxes, and the author’s award winning Mocha Devastation Cake for the sophisticated palate.

She’s hoping that the sale of her book will help support her college education she has just begun. Well Hannah, we at ATC wish you all the best of luck!

Swirly Cupcakes

Posted by on Friday, January 11th, 2008

From Martha Stewart.com: These cupcakes make memorable party treats. Chilling the bowl beforehand helps the cream whip up with the most volume.

Ingredients

Makes 30

  • Dark Chocolate Cake
  • 3 pints ice cream, any flavor
  • 5 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar
  • Sprinkles, for decorating

Directions

  1. Place 30 paper baking cups on two baking sheets. Set aside. Slice each cake layer in half horizontally, making a total of four layers.
  2. Using a 2 1/4-inch-round cookie cutter, cut 30 rounds from cake layers. Place a round in each baking cup. Using a 2-inch ice-cream scoop, place one scoop ice cream on each cake round. Transfer baking sheets to freezer for 20 minutes. Chill a medium mixing bowl.
  3. Place heavy cream and confectioners’ sugar in the chilled bowl. Whip until soft peaks form. Fit a 16-inch pastry bag with a coupler. Fill pastry bag with whipped cream. Starting at the perimeter of a baking cup, pipe a spiral of whipped cream, covering the ice cream. Repeat with remaining cupcakes. Return to freezer, and chill until hard, about 45 minutes. Decorate with sprinkles, and serve.

barefoot contessa: Coconut Cupcake & Cream Cheese Frosting Mix

Posted by on Friday, January 11th, 2008

One of my Christmas gifts this year, was a box filled to the brim with cupcake stuff. Liners, mini tins, sprinkles, and a Coconut Cupcake & Cream Cheese Frosting Mix by barefoot contessa.

Let me say outright, I am a snob when it comes to box mixes. I’m not sure when it happened exactly. But, I am definitely box mix prejudiced. I stuck the box mix in the pantry, expecting it to grow a heavy case of dust bunnies.

Fast forward a few weeks. I have been slacking here at ATC. Before Jess finds a reason to kick me to the curb, I needed to step it up. Okay, Ill review this damn box mix.

I have made Ina Garten’s Coconut Cupcakes from scratch. They are heavenly. I mean seriously delightful. Its one of my fav recipes. Did I have high hopes for this mix? No, no I did not. Its a mix, come on. I buckled down and baked them up last night. It was easy as pie. The box comes with 3 packets. One with dry batter mix, one with shredded coconut and one with frosting mix. For the batter, you need butter and water. For the frosting you need butter and cream cheese. The box says it makes 10 cupcakes. I got 12, which is nice. Who makes 10 cupcakes?? Those 2 empty liners would be lonely!

Verdict: The cake was eh. It indeed tasted like box mix. It IS a box mix cupcake. They weren’t bad. Just not that down homey taste you get from scratch. The frosting was divine. With that said, you added your own butter and cream cheese. I think the packet labeled “frosting” was just sugar. You cant screw that up.

Would I buy this mix at $10.95/box? No. I would not. But it would be okay in a pinch. Cream cheese frosting makes everything better. When it comes down to it, I didn’t think it was really any easier than making my own cupcakes. And I can make them for less than the mix.

Cupcake Wisdom

Posted by on Thursday, January 10th, 2008
If anyone has noticed, sadly, my contribution to this beautiful, delicious website community has been sparse here lately. This lack is due to the hardship my small family has been facing this harsh winter. Life has been difficult, to say the very least, almost unmanageable, almost but not quite, we’re still alive and kicking and I believe that is worth something (if not everything). My mother, in her infinite and dear wisdom, keeps reminding me that what doesn’t kill us will make us stronger, and I have chosen to believe her, I have chosen to keep going and not let the harshness of these gray months steal the joy my heart holds. It has been a task, let me tell you, and some days are better than others, those days are what keeps me going.
Today, however, has been one of those other days, one of those hard days. Last night was one of those hard nights. Last night was tears and questions of why, last night was a fitful sleep that carried into this morning, and this morning was waking up with a tremendous headache that made the world seems to bright and too dark at the same time. Then I had a notion, a small, almost flippant notion, almost but not quite. I decided to google the phrase ‘Happiness is a Cupcake’ and I found something! Something small, not unlike a cupcake, something delicious, quite like a cupcake. And so friends, I will post it here, for perhaps this wisdom is not only for me but for you as well, dear ones.

Finding happiness in a cupcake

Recently, I’ve addressed an important question that’s been nagging at me for the past several weeks: how do bakeries make muffins with those beautiful, break-them-off muffin tops?

Perhaps a little background is necessary first.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I’ve been on a bit of a cupcake binge lately. However, my cupcakes are always so small and humble-looking. In the back of my mind, what I’m really thinking about are those behemoths that they sell at Starbucks. If I was truly a cupcake connoisseur, my creations would be just as glamorous looking. Besides, more cupcake is always better, right?

So, I was delighted when I found the answer last week: they make a special muffin pan for this task. The pans have an ordinary-sized receptacle for the paper liner, but the top quickly flares out allowing for muffin-top maximus.

The pans work as advertised, but I quickly discovered a problem.

Imagine a cupcake shaped like a portobello mushroom: it has a small base and a comically-large muffin top. In fact, the top is so large that the cupcake acts as a tiny pedestal for a lot of frosting. And then–just as quickly as you can say ‘Williams-Sonoma’ (professional 12-cup muffin pan, $17)–all of the balance that makes the cupcake so wonderful and so enticing disappears into a top-heavy, 500 calorie turd.

The cupcake–in its infinite wisdom–has taught me something about happiness: find satisfaction in your current abilities because more isn’t always better.

1upcake!!!

Posted by on Thursday, January 10th, 2008

For those who appreciate a little nerdiness, you will love this shirt!! I couldn’t help but reminisce about Super Mario Brothers. $17.99 at Think Geek.

“There’s a 70% chance the object you’re standing on is a cake.”

1upcake: the ultimate combination of cute and utility. It not only offers extra life, but also frosting-y goodness. Plus, the cupcake, just like the 1up Mushroom, is the ultimate reward, better than cookies because it’s moist and better than cake because it’s portable. And you don’t have to worry about the ratio of people to cake with 1upcakes.

INGREDIENTS: Cotton, Mushroom, Water, Sugar, Enriched Wheat Flour, Whole Eggs, Soybean Oil, Nonfat Milk Powder, Salt, Baking Powder, Corn Starch, FD&C Yellow #6. This product is manufactured in a facility that also processes tree nuts. (Not really.)

1upcake printed on a 100% cotton, navy babydoll.

The question is….

Posted by on Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Is a cupcake with no frosting still a cupcake?

My grandmother, who was a home economics teacher her entire career, says yes. She told me “A muffin should crack on top, a cupcake should not. It’s as simple as that.” In her mind, any little cakes that have not cracked on top, are cupcakes, frosting or not.

What do you think? Delurk and tell us your take on cupcakes sans frosting. Id love to hear your opinions!

Billabong Vs Johnny Cupcakes

Posted by on Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Johnny Cupcakes just posted about this on his site. Billabong has taken his design and used it for one of their latest shirts. Not nice, people.

In his words:
“Oh no you didn’t!

Above you can see my original golden tooth Johnny Cupcakes design, which was created and released in 2005. It was featured in many magazines, blogs, and even seen on television. Next to it you’ll see something very similar.

Anyways, a ton of my loyal fans just sent me some different links to this new shirt that Billabong JUST released, called “Billabong Bling Bling”. Looks familiar, eh? It’s the exact same thing, minus the cupcake! Look at the teeth, look at the bottom row of teeth. With them being a bazillion dollar corporation, you figured they could of at least changed it around a little bit, or hired a decent designer. I guess they had to do this so that all the other corporate giants wouldn’t pick on them for not being bully enough. Tssk Tsk!

Please spread the word on this not so good situation / “coincidence” via blogs, myspace, facebook, etc.. The truth MUST be told about this type of nonsense! (Feel free to use the photo & info above.)”
