Green Tea Cupcakes

Posted by on March 8th, 2012

Just in time for St. Patrick’s Day, here are some yummy looking green tea cupcakes.  I think they look quite festive.  The green tea powder, used in both the cupcake and the frosting, gives them a nice cool green color.

Cupcake Bucket

Posted by on March 8th, 2012

I love Target! Why? Because I almost always can find something cupcake there!  This week I went hunting in their Easter section and found this adorable cupcake bucket for only $8. It’s a pretty good price considered it’s about a foot tall.  What a perfect place for the Easter bunny to put his candy and eggs!  They also had Easter cupcake kits, sprinkles and toppers.

Crayon Cupcakes

Posted by on March 7th, 2012

If you have children, then you have crayon scraps. You know, teeny tiny crayon stubs that no one colors with anymore. In our house, sometimes these get eaten by the dog, but if we prevent that from happening, these little crayon scraps pile up in the bottom of the crayon box.

So, what do you do with old crayons? Why, you make cupcakes of course! My kids will happily color with their new “crayon cupcakes,” giving new life to old stubs.

Here’s how:

  1. Sort different colors, or color groups, into separate clean soup cans.
  2. Heat a saucepan of water on the stove.
  3. Gently drop soup cans into the water. Watch closely as the crayons in your can(s) melt.
  4. In the meantime, line your muffin pan with cupcake wrappers.
  5. Carefully pour your colored wax into the cupcake wrappers. You can create cupcakes of solid colors, or layer different colors into each cupcake.
  6. Allow “cupcakes” to harden in pan. There’s no need to bake anything!

Happy Birthday, Oreo!

Posted by on March 6th, 2012

Did you know that the Oreo cookie turns 100 years old this month?  What better way to celebrate than with Oreo cupcakes??

My favorite way to eat an oreo has always been icing first, cookie last.  However, after seeing this cupcake, I think my favorite way to eat an oreo would be in cupcake form!  Be sure to check out the Oreo Birthday Cupcake recipe, which of course features lots of those delightful treats called Oreos.

Happy (belated) Birthday, Dr. Seuss!

As many of you may and should know, Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax came out in the movie theaters this past Friday. This was also Dr. Seuss’ birthday as well!

Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” – The Lorax

In honor of him and  premiere of The Lorax, Liz from Hoosier Homemade made these amazing Lorax inspired cupcakes!

Duncan Hines Frosting Creations

Posted by on March 6th, 2012

Today I ran into Walmart to pick up a few groceries and I noticed a display for a new Duncan Hines product, Frosting Creations.  Frosting Creations are flavor packets that you stir into frosting to create new flavors.  The steps are really easy, start with the frosting starter and choose one of the 12 available flavor options.  Make a hole in the frosting center, add the entire flavor packet, and stir until well combined.  The flavor options include bubble gum, cotton candy, chocolate marshmallow, cherry vanilla, cinnamon role, white chocolate raspberry, and more!  At my local Walmart the flavor packets were $0.94 each.  If you decide to try the flavor packets, check out the website, there are recipes for each flavor!

Irish Carbomb Cupcakes

By a show of hands, who would enjoy a Guinness-chocolate cake, filled with chocolate ganache (which has been spiked with Irish whiskey) and topped with vanilla buttercream (which has been spiked with Baileys Irish Cream). Do not eat these Irish cupcakes and then drive, please.

You can find the recipe and instructions at Brown-Eyed Baker. Enjoy!

Chocolate, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough, Toasted Marshmallow Cupcakes

Posted by on February 28th, 2012

The name of these cupcakes is so long but they sound so delicious and like something I would make and love! Joy the Baker made these Chocolate, Peanut Butter Cookie Dough, Toasted Marshmallow cupcakes.  There’s so many different components to these cupcakes but each part seems to compliment the others.  Chocolate and peanut butter are one of my favorite combinations and I love the thought of cookie dough inside a cupcake.  After majoring in nutiriton in college I am well aware of the food safety issues related to eating raw cookie dough but who doesn’t love cookie dough?  Top the cupcakes off with a toasted marshmallow meringue and  you have one deliciously rich cupcake combination!

Posted by on February 26th, 2012

Today the black bean cupcake with guava frosting was supposed to make its debut at the Food Network’s South Beach Food & Wine Festival.  Who in the world thought up such a combination, you might be asking yourself?  Goya Foods, a well-known Hispanic foods company, and pastry chef Hedy Goldsmith came up with this recipe in response to the challenge to make a dessert using the company’s product line. Go here for a recipe and see what you think!

A Cupcake Birthday Party

Posted by on February 26th, 2012

I have always been a fan of themed parties.  I think it makes for easier party planning and I like it when things are coordinated!  The Sweetest Occasion blogged about Amory a four year old’s cupcake themed birthday party. The whole party is dedicated to cupcake decorating, both real cupcakes with frosting and sprinkles and paper craft cupcakes.  Even the party favors were cupcake props!  The pictures of the party make it look like a fun birthday for any age!

When it comes to cupcakes, I’m pretty open-minded. But I was truly horrified when I saw the title “Sushi Cupcakes.” Then I saw the picture. So, because this picture made me laugh aloud, I thought I should share it with you. I dare you to tell your friends you’re bringing sushi cupcakes to the party, and then show up with these:

ATC Review: From Scratch: A Business Story

Posted by on February 22nd, 2012

From Scratch: A Business Story is the story of Crave Cookies and Cupcakes.  Two sisters started Crave Cookies and Cupcakes in 2004 after years of making cookies for family and friends.  The From Scratch: A Business story details the sister’s journey from using an old pizza oven and two kitchen aid mixers in their original Calgary, Canada location through their expansion to seven storefront locations.

ATC was sent a copy of the 60-page story to review.  I thought the tale of the two sisters business adventure was well written.  As I read about their shop and cupcakes I could picture what the inside of the store looked like and see them inside their kitchen baking cupcakes.  I love that Crave has stuck with their philosophy of baking from scratch.  The story is not just for the cupcake lover or the business entrepreneur; it’s able to appeal to multiple audiences, as it is also a story about family and following a dream when others doubt you.
