This little fox card is too cute! I love that the fox that is looking at a cupcake looks like he belongs in a circus! This card, which costs £3.10, is made using shades of pink that are vegetable ink.

St Patricks Day Cupcakes

Posted by on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

St Patricks Day is just around the corner, and well although I am not Irish I am keen to celebrate for any reason at all.  Countries such as India fascinate me because every week there is a new celebration… but being Australian, I settle for the fact that we constantly seem to have some home grown festival to celebrate, and where there is a gap in the calendar, we look to our multicultural heritage.

So last week was National Women’s Day, and this week is St Patricks Day, and in trying to find the perfect cupcake to bake for our humble celebration at work on Thursday, I stumbled onto the Brown Eyed Baker, a website I often frequent, who has created her St Patty Cuppies which are called ‘Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes’.  But it is not just these fantastically boozy cupcakes she has, but a whole selection of St Patrick’s treats including beer waffles with cinnamon-caramel apples, guinness milk chocolate ice cream, Irish brown bread and more.

For me though, the cupcakes will be perfect!! Recipe can be found here!

Blarney Stone Cupcakes

Posted by on Tuesday, March 15th, 2011

Do you subscribe to Hello Cupcake, What’s Newsletter? If you don’t, you might want to consider it.  The authors of two great cupcake books, Hello Cupcake! and What’s New, Cupcake? have an online newsletter where they send emails once a month; Which is nice because you are not overwhelmed with emails.  Each month’s email contains a recipe and decorating instructions for cupcakes that fit that month’s major holiday or major event (January was Superbowl cupcakes).  This month’s Blarney Stone Cupcakes recipe ties into St. Patrick’s Day.  I love that everything on the cupcakes are edible, including the Blarney stones which are breakfast treats and shamrocks which are rolled spearmint.  Below you will find the recipe for the cupcakes but for more tips on how to roll the shamrocks, you’ll have to look at the technique of the month page.

Disney Cupcake Pins

Posted by on Friday, March 11th, 2011

Well, you all know that cupcakes are one of my greatest loves in life but coming in second has to be Disney.  My family and I proudly consider ourselves “Disney Freaks” and make at least one yearly trip to Disney World.  Pin collecting and trading is very popular with many Disney fans. There are clubs and websites dedicated just to this hobby.  I may not be a diehard collector, but after Facebook fan Lori posted these pins on our Facebook page, I had to go collect this set.

Each cupcake is fashioned to resemble a Disney character; Marie, TInkerbell, Minnie, Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy.  Their official release date was yesterday March 10th but so far the only place I have been able to find them is on Ebay for around $25-$30.   Thanks for spotting this great cupcake find Lori!

Simple Fondant Cupcakes!

Posted by on Friday, March 11th, 2011

Some people look down on cupcakes that are quick and easy to make, but often, the effort of designing a simple fondant decoration can be very rewarding.  As you may know I am in search of cupcakes for my daughter’s school fete which I can whip up in a jiffy.  For these, I want to make an impact to get the highest price possible, but don’t want to spend 5 years in the kitchen!  So on seeing these frog in the pond cupcakes I know I have found a winner.

These frogs are created and designed by Wendy’s Whimsies and are cute, plus I can make them even simpler!  We have a ton of smarties left over from a birthday party so I will just make pipe a dot of icing onto each smartie to make the eyes!

If you have any great ideas let me know!!

Apple Carrot Cupcakes with Maple Frosting

When I saw this recipe on NY1 yesterday, my mouth started watering and I just knew I had to share it with you! If you visit NY1’s website, you can even watch an instructional video. (Warning: Don’t watch this if you’re hungry!)

Ingredients for 2 dozen cupcakes:

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups light brown sugar
  • 1 tbs baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 cup of grated carrot
  • 1 cup of grated apple
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla

Ingredients for the yummy frosting:

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • 4 tbs butter
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup

Mix frosting ingredients until smooth, and then put in fridge. Preheat oven to 350. Combine flour, brown sugar, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, carrots and apples, and mix well. Add vegetable oil, applesauce, eggs, and vanilla and mix well. Divide your batter into paper-lined cupcake pans. Bake for 25 minutes. Let cupcakes cool, and then top with chilled frosting.  Then enjoy!

DIY: Fabric Flower Cupcake Toppers

Posted by on Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Last summer I followed Once Wed’s directions to create flower fabric garland.  Had I been in cupcake fan mode I would have thought to turn the fabric flowers into cupcake toppers! This is exactly what Paiges of Style decided to do, using the same Once Wed idea she created fabric flower cupcake toppers.  These toppers are great because you can customize them to match any color scheme or use up scraps of fabric you have lying around.  On her website Paige has great instructions with pictures to help you along the way.

Wisconsin Is for Cupcakes

Posted by on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

When I think of Wisconsin I think of cheese, not cupcakes but John Holcomb, the artist behind the United Plates print series seems to think differently.  For each state Holcomb has created a print that represents that states’ shape.  The state lines of Wisconsin, according to Holcomb seem to make up the same shape as an Oreo cupcake.  While Wisconsin might be the only cupcake, there is a plate for each state and they are available for purchase with varying sizes ranging in prices from $30-100.

Best ever Hummingbird Cupcakes!

Posted by on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

There are a large number of blogs that I follow religiously because they offer such fantastic information, and one of those is Annie’s Eats.  It is not all about cupcakes, but then I need to eat other forms of food too (well.. sometimes!) and everything she features is brilliant!

But what I want to share today, is a cupcake that she recently featured and that I have tried and it really is… really good!  Plus it looks amazing!  This is the Hummingbird Cupcake!  No birds however are harmed in the creation of this baby!  It has loads of yummy things though like bananas, walnuts and coconut!  If Grandma is coming around, this is the cupcake to bake!  Best of all the full recipe is available here.

But you may want more than just a tasty cupcake recipe?  Well Annie’s Eats also goes one step further and tells you how to make those absolutely fabulous dried pineapple flowers to decorate them with here.  I have to make cupcakes next week for the school autumn fete (we are either six months behind or in front seasonally) so these are going to be a hit with the conservative patrons!  Of course I’ll whip out some whacky colored cupcakes with adorable kid inspired fondant toppers to get the younger crowd buying as well!

Happy Baking!

Introducing Cristina Del Sol’s Cupcake Art

Posted by on Saturday, March 5th, 2011

It is a pleasure for me to introduce ATC readers to Cristina Del Sol, an award-winning Canadian mixed media and experimental visual artist with a soft spot for cupcakes.

Cristina is a unique artist, who paints as a way of exploring and experimenting. Her art serves as a journal of her life’s journey. For Cristina, art is a form of meditation, one that connects her to herself, the world around her, and the people who see her work. Cristina believes in, advocates for, and shares the healing power of art.

While her finished product is always captivating, it is her process that leaves me in awe. Her cupcake paintings are so much more than paintings – they are three-dimensional creations, using a variety of material ranging from cardboard to copper. She builds the base and the toppings of her art cupcakes much like the real ones, sometimes even piping the “frosting.” I wish I could watch her work!

Learn more about Cristina at her website: Cristina Del Sol. You can also view (and shop for) her art, much of it “cupcake-inspired,” at her Etsy shop: Cristina’s Fine Art Store or her blog: Cristina’s Daily Paintings.

Long Live the Cupcake Party

Posted by on Saturday, March 5th, 2011

After throwing our first ever cupcake themed party a month ago for my daughter’s 7th Birthday I am a massive fan.  The girls all had a fantastic time decorating the cupcakes, in the tea party like setting I had created.  I only wish I had known about these first!

This is a cupcake centerpiece , which (don’t be fooled by the picture) is quite big standing at about 20 inches tall, each cupcake being 5 inches tall.  But the best thing about these is that they offer you unlimited ideas for future cupcake parties, or tea parties.

Bought new each of these cupcakes is actually a jar, and inside is a packet of cupcake flavored cookies! So you can, if you want give them as gifts after the party… OR you can keep them and re use again and again.  Even play games with them, such as hiding something in one cupcake jar!  Actually I am thinking these would be perfect party favors at our wedding later this year…

Of course, you don’t need to get the full stand with all 24 cupcakes, you can also buy the cupcake jars filled with cupcake cookies individually.  Best of all, is I hear the cookies are amazing! I could really go the triple chocolate cookie jar right now!

If you are looking for these, you’ll find them at Diva Entertains!

Cupcake Fondue

Posted by on Saturday, March 5th, 2011

I love, love, love this idea! Cupcake Fondue! Amanda Krueger from Bake it Pretty, a cupcake shop in Asheville, North Carolina that is on my list of places to go to, blogged about this on Pint Size Social.  It takes the idea of a cupcake topping bar that we shared with you a few months back to a whole new level! Fondue is great since both kids and adults can enjoy it.
