Day of the Cupcake at Sugar Dolls

Posted by on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

Sugar Dolls bakery recently celebrated a Day of the Cupcake at Sacred Heart Tattoo of Atlanta, Georgia.  Visitors ate cupcakes, played cupcake games, competed in a cupcake eating contest, and got cupcake tattoos.  I believe the old adage is true, that pictures tell a thousand words, so I will leave them to it …

Wine and Cupcakes – what do you think?

Posted by on Friday, October 29th, 2010

On November the 6th the first Wine & Cupcake Bar in Baltimore will be opened.  The venture is a collaboration of Emily’s Desserts and Pizzazz Tuscan Grille which will see the restaurant transformed into a wine and cupcake bar on Friday and Saturday nights.

But do wine and cupcakes really go together?

Don’t get me wrong, I love both, but I cannot think of a time when I have actually had them together.  Even when I eat out, I will always finish my wine with the main meal before commencing on dessert, and if I do drink with dessert it is usually a port or something sweet, like the aptly named ‘dessert wine’.

But then I could be wrong, I sometimes am (just don’t tell my kids), and wine and cupcakes could be perfect.

For more information, to get an invite to the grand opening, or to browse the wine and cupcake pairing menu, see Emily’s Desserts here.  If you do happen to go and try some of these wines and cupcakes, let me know!  I would love to hear how it goes!

Meatloaf Cupcakes by the Meatloaf Bakery

Omega-3 Cupcake by The Meatloaf Bakery

Meatloaf cupcakes aren’t just for April Fool’s Day anymore. Chicago’s Meatloaf Bakery serves them up every day of the week, along with bite-sized loafies (so cute!) and full-sized meatloaves. Cynthia, aka The Chief Mealoaf Maker, had been experimenting in meatloaf for years when she asked herself the question, “Who said meatloaf always had to be baked as a‚ well, as a loaf?” At that point, she found herself free to make her meatloaves are pretty as she wanted them to be.   And really, what’s better looking than a cupcake?

San Francisco Cupcakes

Posted by on Thursday, September 16th, 2010

This past week I was fortunate enough to visit San Francisco.  Since I have done the well-known tourist attractions in the past, this time I had to visit some cupcake shops!  In one day I managed to visit four cupcakes shops in downtown San Francisco and will now share with you my thoughts.

The first cupcake shop we stopped in was American Cupcake.  The decor inside was unique and unlike any cupcake shop I have been in before.  Most cupcake shops are cutesy but this shop was very modern with crazy lighting. When you walk in to your right is a case full of cupcakes, followed by the cash register and then a bar.  American offers both a sweet and savory menu and cupcake wine pairings.

Although I was intrigued by the different flavors like pixie stick or cotton candy, I decided to go with a classic flavor, red velvet.  I have to admit I did not love the cupcake; in my opinion it was too dry and crumbly. Read the rest of this entry »

Walking Dead Cupcakes

Posted by on Saturday, September 4th, 2010

Zombies on Cupcakes?  Yummy!

The Walking Dead is a new television series based on the comic book series of the same name.  In the US, the series will air on AMC, and in the UK, FX.  Hence the Fox logo amongst the spooky frosting faces.

It was Fox who ordered the cupcakes from Clares Cupcakes of London, for a press party.  The folks at Clares really know how to make a cupcake.  I was blown away by the pictures on their website.

They specialize in cupcakes for special events, and I have never seen more tantalizing displays.  I wish I’d had them for my wedding!  They hand deliver orders to events in the London area. Read the rest of this entry »

New Pictures from Cherish Cupcakes

Posted by on Sunday, August 8th, 2010

Cherish Cupcakes, of Belfast, UK, recently updated their Flickr photostream.  You should check it out, because there’s a lot more to see.  I’m just including a few of my favorites here.  They call the top one the “Endangered Cupcake” which made me laugh out loud.  And I guess it means we shouldn’t eat it.  (Are those Cheerios for ears?  How cute is that?)

CakeShooters from Sprinkles

Posted by on Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Sprinkles, a cakery in Winter Park, Florida, is now offering CakeShooters.

Layers of cake and frosting in a plastic contraption that allows you to “shoot” the cake into your mouth.  It might remind you of the pushpops you had as a kid.  Or it might remind you of the jello shooters you had in college.

Let me remind you that it is illegal to eat cupcakes and drive in most states, no matter how adorable the temptation.

These tantalizing little devils cost $3 each and come in six flavors:  Yellow Raspberry Swirl, Pina Colada, O.M.G., Signature, Vanilla, and Chocolate.

For real:  What will they think of next?

Miglet’s Gluten-Free Bakery Makes Cupcakes for All!

Posted by on Saturday, July 24th, 2010

We usually think of cupcakes as a treat that’s available to everyone. Their small size seems to even make them an option for those with more restricted diets. This, sadly, isn’t entirely true, especially for those with celiac disease and gluten intolerance.  When you can’t eat wheat flour, creating cupcakes becomes a much bigger undertaking.

This is where Miglet’s Cupcake Shop of Danville, CA, comes in to save the day.  Miglet’s specializes in gluten-free baked goods – they started with cupcakes and soon expanded to everything from cinnamon buns to hamburger buns.  Katie Alin, Miglet’s founder, started the bakery after working at The Taylor Family Foundation’s Celiac Camp and at Whole Foods and seeing how hard it was for those with gluten-free diets to satisfy their sweet tooth. Race Car Cupcakes

Clever Cupcakes yet again prove they are veritable demigods of fondant with this cupcake set for a two-year old’s birthday party. The tire cupcake is my personal favorite – I think it really shows the care they put into their decoration. The theme of the birthday party was the Disney movie Cars. Since Clever Cupcakes doesn’t make a practice of copying the likenesses of trademarked characters, even in fondant, they use opportunities to be more creatively true to their assigned theme.

Law & Order or cake shows?

Posted by on Monday, July 19th, 2010

Seems to be the question that Jeff Houck from The Tampa Tribune is asking after TLC’s airing of DC Cupcakes on Friday night.  DC Cupcakes is an inside look at the world of Sophie LaMontagne and Katherine Kallinis of Georgetown Cupcake in Washington, D.C. Both ladies gave away their corporate jobs in venture capital and fashion respectively to open the store, which now attracts hour-long queues for their cupcakes.

Houck takes a light poke at both the show and TLC, who he states “used to be called The Learning Channel until it realized viewers were averse to mixing education and television”.  With other shows such as ‘Ace of Cakes‘, ‘Cake Boss‘, ‘Ultimate Cake Off‘ and ‘Cupcake Wars‘ he thinks we have gone too far and longs for the days where there were more episodes of Law & Order than cake shows.

What do you think?  Have we reached cake saturation with our shows?  In Australia we have no dedicated cake shows, and our educational stations are still giving on the whole educational content.  So I am in favor of MORE cupcake shows. What about for you? And with five more episodes to go of DC Cupcakes, will you be tuning in or out?

These hail from Kick*ss Cupcakes in Somerville, Ma!

Oh My .. next time I head back to New Hampshire this will most definitly be on the top of my list to stop at!

Jennifer Aniston is Addicted!

Posted by on Sunday, July 18th, 2010

According to ShowbizSpy, Jennifer Aniston is one of us!  According to their sources (who I am certain are quite reliable), Jennifer is addicted to the Good Guy Cupcake from Crumbs Bake Shop in West Hollywood

The “Good Guy” is a vanilla cake with rainbow sprinkles baked in, filled with vanilla cream cheese frosting, and topped with vanilla cream cheese frosting, covered with rainbow sprinkles and white chocolate drizzle. A portion of proceeds from the Good Guy is donated to the SFK organization

But Ms. Aniston knows about moderation — apparently, she limits herself to one Good Guy Cupcake per week.

Carrie Underwood Loves Cupcakes Too!

Posted by on Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

The new issue of People Magazine will hit the stands this Friday and it will feature 5 pages of photos from Carrie Underwood‘s July 10th wedding, where she tied the knot with professional hockey player Mike Fisher.

The wedding cake was a cupcake tower made by bridesmaid Ivey Childers, who runs the IveyCake Bakery in Franklin, Tennesse.

Underwood describes her cupcakes as “as the most amazing cupcakes in the universe.”

IveyCake features cupcakes with names like:  Two-Faced, The Apology, Big Dreams, Crazy Ex, Gold Digger, Goody Two Shoes, and my favorite:  Lucky in Love.

100,000 Cupcakes at Daisy Cafe & Cupcakery

Posted by on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Having sold more than 98,000 cupcakes in 14 months since opening, Daisy Cafe & Cupcakery in Madison, Wisconsin  is poised to sell its 100,000th cupcake.

Seriously, that’s a lot of cupcakes.

The person who purchases the lucky cupcake will be presented with a prize package that includes: dinner at the Daisy Café & Cupcakery, a night’s stay at any one of seven North Central hotels in the Madison area, a bottle of Champagne, and two Strawberry-Champagne cupcakes. In addition, the Daisy Café & Cupcakery will donate $1,000.00 in the name of the winner to Porchlight Inc, the Madison non-profit organization committed to reducing homelessness in the city.

Would it be silly of me to fly to Madison just to buy a cupcake?  I’m thinking about it.  I really love Wisconsin this time of year.

Further, the Daisy Café & Cupcakery will donate $100.00 to Porchlight Inc in the name of each of the next five customers who buy cupcakes. So, I should probably bring five friends.

Daisy’s co-owner, Daryl Sisson, says, “We were the first to bring premium cupcakes to Wisconsin and, although we hadn’t thought 100,000 cupcakes would come so soon, we’re thrilled to be here. And we are not standing still–we’re rolling out new cupcake flavors every month.” Co-owner Kathy Brooks adds, “We are especially happy to continue our support of Porchlight with donations in the names of our loyal customers.”

Here is a video about the 4 C’s of Daisy Cafe & Cupcakery!  Gosh, I don’t know when I’ve been so impressed!  Gotta go now, I’ve got plane tickets to buy.

Lingerie Shower Cupcakes by Look Cupcake

Lingerie Cupcakes by Look Cupcake (photo courtesy of Look Cupcake)

Wow, these lingerie cupcakes are lookin’ good.  I’ll be sure to keep Look Cupcake in mind next time I hear someone needs treats for their bachelorette party! They’re stuff isn’t cheap, but it’s conveniently located next door to me in Seattle (on Queen Anne Hill) and you cannot beat their presentation. Too bad they only do events – if they had a storefront, I’d stop by to see if these taste as good as they look!
