This week marks one year since I began working with All Things Cupcake and I have to say, I love my job! I get to write about cupcakes, give away cupcake stuff and talk to cupcake obsessed people just like me on a daily basis. In my very first post for ATC, I shared some Etsy cupcake items that our kiddos (our ourselves) could use on their first days back to school. So I thought, what better way to mark my one year anniversary than to update that post! Here are some wonderful back to school essentials I found this year:

Here’s to another wonderful year with ATC!

There’s nothing more classic geek than Super Mario Brothers. I love how sharply detailed the iconic little characters turn out in fondant!

Boys between the ages of 10 and 14 can be really difficult when it comes to selecting a cupcake design. Basically cupcakes are girly, and they, of course, are manly, so you need something that they can relate too. Ben 10, dinosaurs and matchbox cars are things of the past, but they are not quite at that stage where everything ‘food’ especially if it contains sugar, grease or both is desirable regardless of how it looks!
So coming up with ideas can be difficult. The best method is to look for things they are into, and this includes the games they play on their x-box or computer. These cupcakes above come from Sugar-Design and are perfect for a boy anywhere between the ages of 7 and 12, however you could make them for older boys too, using logos such as Starcraft 2 or COD. Another seven ideas are:

It seems as though there is always something threatening to take the cupcakes spot as a popular food trend. First there were macaroons, then there was pie and popsicles and now it’s doughnuts! Over the last couple of months I have seen lots of recipes for doughnuts in magazines and online. I will admit that I have even considered purchasing a doughnut pan to try out some of the recipes.

These cupcakes are so stinking cute! Muppet Cupcakes from BlueRett Cakes
These remind me of growing up an watching the Muppet’s. If you could have a cupcake designed from anything reminding you of your childhood what would it be?

2009-2010 Holiday Location of The Cupcake Store at Downtown Disney
Downtown Disney is about to have a new permanent attraction: cupcakes! The Cupcake Store, based out of Mission Viejo, CA, had such a successful temporary holiday booth at Downtown Disney that they’ve decided to open up shop there permanently. Word is that they’ll ship in cupcakes daily from the bakery in Mission Viejo to the happy hordes looking to take a break from Splash Mountain and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride.
The Cupcake Store is run by cupcake veteran Janel Mitchell. This is her first solo store after parting ways with business partner John Frank, with whom she founded Frostings Cupcakes. The new Downtown Disney location is set to open up in September. With any luck, they’ll be up and running by the time I go down to SoCal for a visit in a few weeks. If that’s the case, I’ll tell you all about it!

Christina Applegate on the red carpet for Cats and Dogs last month. Image from Growing Your Baby.
I was reading today in Celebrity Baby Scoop that Christina Applegate has admitted to having a different kind of died during her pregnancy. Apparently her healthy diet has fled in the wake of some serious food cravings, and what did she indulge on?
What else but a Sprinkles Cupcake and fried cheese!
So I thought I would assist Christina in her challenge to more closely combine these two taste sensations, and thanks so much to Clever Cupcakes found this – the cheese cupcake!

To me it feels like every year when the flyers come out for back to school shopping and they talk about the fall’s style trends, plaid is always listed as being in style. So why not make your cupcakes fit the season’s style trend and bake these pink plaid cupcakes by Reynold’s. The Reynold’s website helps you find the pink plaid party liners at a store near you and includes detailed instructions on how to decorate your cupcakes with a plaid topping.

Hello all my fellow cupcake lovers out there! This past weekend I made mini-cupcakes for my Best Friends bridal shower.
I made just about 100 mini cupcakes half chocolate and half yellow. I used 2 batches of butter cream frosting, divided into 3rds and made Strawberry and Raspberry frosting with 2 of them and left the other one plain butter cream.
I also used a cupcake stand from Green Party Goods – Square Cupcake Stand !
Here is a picture of my lovely creation(s)!

Everyone loved them! Congrats Megan!

American Cupcake's Red Velvet Fried Chicken (photo by Anthony Mylott)
San Fransisco restaurant American Cupcake decided that the world could use more red velvet. AC’s owner Devon Alpert reckoned that if everyone loved the flavor in cake and cupcakes, they would like it in fried chicken too. And it looks like she was absolutely right. In the delicious words of urbandaddy:
At first glance, it’ll look like a heaping plate of leg, thigh and breast. But upon further inspection, you’ll see that the chicken has taken on a slight reddish hue. That’s because your precious fried bird has been pre-soaked in AC’s signature red velvet cake batter, then dredged in toasted, crumbled bits of red velvet cupcake before being dipped in a frying pan.
Because they don’t want their delicious fried chicken to be lonely, American Cupcake includes a side of cream cheese and garlic mashed potatoes, inspired by the frosting on the cake.

Marisela totally rocked it with this awesome cupcake design that she created for her niece’s ‘Off to College’ Party. Marisela got the idea watching DC Cupcakes where she saw them make two cupcake pictures using a company’s logo and planning it out on a grid in order to map out the picture.
Without time to do a trial run or practice at all, Marisela pulled this off brilliantly creating the monogram for the college. She used no less than sixty mini cupcakes, all red velvet and topped with cream cheese frosting. The occasion was a small BBQ, so she used a styrofoam base underneath covered in foil to hold each cupcake in place with a toothpick. Now I think that is a great idea!
Well what did her niece think of all this effort? She was totally stoked!!

Nomskulls - Silicon Skull Cupcake Molds by Fred & Friends
If I did “Nerdcake Product of the Week”, Nomskulls would be top of the list in the category. These cutie-skull molds come four in a box for $12 from Fred & Friends (though you’ll have to go to Amazon or Pop Deluxe to actually buy them). F&F also includes a recipe for the squiggly brain frosting shown on the above nomskullcake:
FRED’S BRAINY FROSTING
- 1 recipe for vanilla frosting (or a store-bought tub)
- confectioners’ sugar (for stiffer frosting )
- red or black food coloring (or both)
- pastry bag and a large round tip (#12 works well)
Add confectioners’ sugar to the frosting until it‘s stiff enough to hold its form, yet still soft enough to pipe. To the frosting add food coloring(s) to reach desired color. If your cupcakes aren’t dome shaped, pile on a small mound of frosting first. Then pipe two lines down the center of the cupcake. Finally, pipe a squiggly pile of frosting onto each “hemisphere”. Mmmm…brains.

Hop on over to From Married to Merry to learn about Meg’s “semi-homemade” Hostess Cupcakes. She’s too humble to say it, but I bet they taste better than the “real thing.”
She uses a cake mix for the cupcake, but her filling is homemade:
- One 8 oz package cream cheese
- 1 jar of marshmellow fluff
- 1 tsp of vanilla
Mix all ingredients in a food processor. Then chill for 30 minutes. She recommends setting aside a little bit of the chilled filling to use as topping. To fill the cupcakes, she used a Pampered Chef Easy Accent Decorator. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s that time of year again! Time to buy school supplies, clean out the backpack and shop for new school clothes. My son goes back to school in just two short weeks and of course my mind has drifted to thoughts of making him some special cupcakes to celebrate. Although I haven’t decided what kind I am making yet, here are some of my favorites. And if you pull out your mixer and pans to celebrate back to school as well, make sure you send us some photos!
