What do Cupcakes and Cell Phones have in common?

Posted by on Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Not much until Google arrived on the scene by making an operating system (think Windows Vista) for mobile phones.  They have named their operating system “Android” and the latest release of the software “Cupcake”.

Here is a snapshot of “Cupcake” in action.  Where is the frosting?

Known as an ice cream innovator, Cold Stone is breaking into another category for sweet indulgences with three signature cupcake Creations. Offered from Feb. 4 – March 31, 2009, these cupcakes are the sweetest gift for any sweetheart during Valentine’s Day.

In recent years the cupcake trend has been sweeping the country with more and more cupcake specialty shops sprouting in every city. This trend, inspired by popular television, such as Sex and the City, has made its way out of children’s parties and into the adult world as a delectable treat for most any occasion, from birthdays to promotions to celebrating a Friday.

“These ice cream cupcakes are a perfect new addition to Cold Stone’s offerings of indulgent desserts,” said Suzanne Schutz, vice president of Cold Stone marketing. “We’ve enhanced our menu of deliciously affordable luxuries, while creating a new setting for cupcake lovers to experience this sweet trend.”

Made in a rich Belgian chocolate shell, the Cold Stone ice cream cupcakes are layered with moist cake, fudge and premium ice cream. Topped with fluffy frosting and an edible decoration, these cupcakes are true to the Cold Stone brand as an innovative and quality indulgence. The three Cold Stone signature cupcakes are Cake Batter Delux, Sweet Cream and Double Chocolate Devotion™. Descriptions of these three cupcakes are below.

* Cake Batter Delux: Moist red velvet cake layered with fudge [and] Cake Batter ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell and topped with pink frosting and rainbow sprinkles.
* Sweet Cream: Moist yellow cake layered with fudge and Sweet Cream ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell, finished with Bettercreme frosting and Duo Mistrals topping.
* Double Chocolate Devotion: Moist Devil’s Food cake layered with fudge and chocolate ice cream in a rich Belgian chocolate shell and topped with Bettercreme frosting and an OREO® cookie.

For a limited time only, these cupcakes can be purchased at any Cold Stone Creamery location nationwide at $9.99 for a pack of a half dozen cupcakes. The cupcakes can come in a single flavor or a variety pack, and since it is Cold Stone, guests also have the ability to create their own ice cream cupcake at select locations.

Another sweet treat in Cold Stone stores, just in time for Valentine’s Day, is the Sweet Strawberry Romance ice cream cake. Sweet Strawberry Romance puts a new twist on the traditional Cold Stone Signature Cake. Instead of just one ice cream flavor, Cold Stone is swirling Sweet Cream and Strawberry ice cream together in addition to adding strawberry mix-ins. This ice cream creation is then layered between sheets of moist yellow cake and finished with pink frosting, crumbled graham cracker pie crust and chocolate heart toppers. Sweet Strawberry Romance is available from February 4–14, 2009, at Cold Stone Creamery locations throughout the country.

I just wanted to share this post from the Muddy’s Bake Shop Blog

In 2007, large toy manufacturers who outsource their production to China etc, sold toys with high lead content, unsafe parts, and made from dangerous chemicals. In response, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) , which among other things, mandates third-party testing and certification for all toys. This testing will be easy for large corporations who churn out thousands of each toy a year.

However, the way the current act is written, it puts most small toy-making businesses out of business. All the Etsy sellers, crafts fair artisans, etc in America would also have to pay the $300-$4,000 fee for third-party testing for EACH toy that they make. This makes the crafts-fair toymaker extinct while Mattel and Bratz prosper.

Kathi Hardin of Leawood likes to decorate cupcakes as spider webs and mummies.

Spooky little cupcakes make Halloween sweet

Mary G. Pepitone; Wednesday Oct 29, 2008

At Halloween, Kathi Hardin scares up bewitchingly sweet treats. She also has plenty of tricks to help manage a busy household.

Finding the fun factor helps Hardin maintain balance between an active family — with husband Mike and their two sons, Maguire, 6, and Cooper, 2 — and her budding home-based business, Tray Bella. While preparing healthy food choices for her family is a priority, that doesn’t preclude the enjoyment of an occasional coolly decorated confection.

Residence: Leawood

Occupation: Homemaker and head of home-based, tray-decorating business

Special cooking interest: Baked desserts

Does Martha Stewart live here? No (laughing). You should see my kitchen after the boys have helped me cook. I think it’s good for kids to help make food, it’s good for their math and for them to go through the process of making something and tasting the end product. You need to let go of not making a mess. The kitchen needs to be cleaned anyway, and ideally, your kids help with that process, too. As far as my decorating goes, I focus on keeping things simple. I draw inspiration from home and gardening television shows, magazines and shops, then I file it away. When I’m ready to decorate, it just comes to me. I decorate on a budget, mix-and-match items and, luckily, received the gift to be able to pull it all together. When I get bored with how things look, I move all my furniture around, and it’s like I have a brand new house. My mother, Susan Kelly, is very creative and I think I get it from her.

Why start a business designing trays? Trays are so practical, so utilitarian. No matter what is being served, serving it on a tray just makes it so special. Although trays come in a variety of materials, from metal to wicker, I work with wood trays. I paint them and decorate them with beautiful or fun paper. It’s easy to build a tablescape on a tray, and then when it’s time to eat, you can easily remove the tray from the table for more room. It’s a special treat to serve lunch to yourself on a beautiful tray, you can sit anywhere, and cleanup is easy. Using a tray can be both functional and beautiful.

Have you always liked Halloween? I love the fall season, the cool weather, the colors. Nature provides so many things for decorating your home, too. Go out into your yard and collect a bowl of acorns or fill a basket with hedge apples with your kids. I decorate my house with these findings. When it comes to seasonal decorating, keep it simple and use what you already have. For Halloween this year, my fireplace mantel looks like a laboratory just by using glass containers I already owned. The boys and I like to make special treats for Halloween to give away, too. I save the paper towel tubes, decorate and fill them to resemble special English crackers. We also fill glycine bags with treats and I seal them with cute labels.

What is your fall food repertoire? During the fall I love to make soups, including white chicken chili, cheddar and pumpkin. But, to me, there is something old-fashioned about cupcakes. They are simple, beautiful, fun-to-make and a great way to control portions. White cake is the favorite flavor choice in my house. Decorate them using a pastry bag or simply add some sprinkles.

Behold the World’s Largest Cupcake

Posted by on Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

The Food Network’s Duff Goldman lives up to his Ace of Cakes title by baking the largest cupcake in history — now entered in the Guinness Book of World Records. The 61.4-pound creation is more than a foot tall and entirely edible. Reportedly 150 times the size of a regular cupcake, this record-breaker called for 16 pounds of butter, 10 pounds of sugar, and three ounces of food coloring. The mammoth confection supported the Great American Bake Sale, which raised $10,000 and awareness for Share Our Strength, a charity working to fight hunger across America.

Don’t Even Think of Touching That  Cupcake

By SARAH KERSHAW, The New York Times  Published: September 23, 2007

THE cupcake is at something of a crossroads. Edible icon of Americana, frosted symbol of comfort and innocence, it may not have faced such an identity crisis since first appearing in cookbooks sometime in the 18th century.

As we know, cupcakes have had a whopping resurgence: they are retro-food chic, the thing to eat for people in the know.

But cupcakes have also recently been marched to the front lines of the fat wars, banned from a growing number of classroom birthday parties because of their sugar, fat and “empty calories,” a poster food of the child obesity crisis. This was clear when children returned to school this month to a tightening of regulations, federal and state, on what can be served up between the bells.

A Cupcake On Your iPhone
Elizabeth Woyke, 08.06.08, 6:00 AM ET

With hundreds of applications ranging from games to password-keepers to calorie counters, what’s next for the iPhone?

One firm is betting on virtual cupcakes and Tamagotchi-like digital pets. Viximo, an 11-month-old Cambridge, Mass.-based start-up, has created four iPhone applications that revolve around digital goods–digitally produced images that people buy, exchange and display online.
When the applications debut in September or October, users will be able to exchange digital goods, such as a cupcake to celebrate a birthday or a teddy bear as a get-well gift. Senders will pay anywhere from a few cents to a few dollars for the goods.

The Secrets Of Cupcake Perfection (May 25, 2007)

Taste Of Home Magazine Cupcake Contest Yields Sweet Results

(CBS) Each year, more than 15,000 home cooks submit recipes to Taste of Home magazine in hopes of winning one of the publication’s six national recipe contests.

In the most recent contest, the search was for the best cupcake.

Mary Bilyeu of Ann Arbor, Mich., took the top prize, and showed The Early Show viewers the secrets of her success. She was joined by Taste of Home editor in chief Catherine Cassidy.

Bilyeu, a self-confessed chocoholic, tests her recipes on her 16-year-old son and his friends. Her winning recipe contains four types of chocolate and brewed coffee in both the cake the frosting. According to Cassidy, it was this winning combination, as well as a tender cupcake and fluffy frosting, that made the recipe a stand-out.

It’s a small cupcake world, after all.

Posted by on Monday, September 8th, 2008

I just had to share a quick funny note and explain just how small this world is when cupcakes are involved.

The other day, one of All Things Cupcake’s contributors wrote a post about an adorable car she saw with the license plate that said CUPCKES.

She randomly found it while driving around and thought it was too cute not to post. Well turns out, the owner of the car and the license plate reads All Things Cupcake and left a comment on the post! She said:

Hey! That’s my car! I check this blog daily and how surprised was I to see my car on it this morning?!? I live in Chandler and am starting my own cupcake business, I even have a blog of my own. I love checking your blog to see what new and fun cupcake ideas are out there. Thanks for the inspiration!

Will Cupcakes Be the Next Krispy Kreme?

Posted by on Friday, September 5th, 2008

By Jennifer 8. Lee

New York City may well be the cupcake capital of America. Magnolia Bakery of Greenwich Village has produced a list of progeny very Old Testament in length: Magnolia begat Billy’s and Buttercup, and Buttercup in turn begat Sugar Sweet Sunshine.

And then there are Crumbs, Cupcake Cafe (which dates to 1988) and Burgers and Cupcakes. Los Angeles appears to be hopping on the cupcake bandwagon , but New York remains the genesis of cupcake awareness. (Los Angeles, however, gave us the yogurt craze with Pinkberry .)

Many of the cupcake shops have started to clone themselves. Magnolia opened a second spot on the Upper West Side in addition to its Village location. It plans a third store in Rockefeller Center this month. Buttercup Bake Shop now has two places on the East and West Sides of Manhattan. Within the last several years, Cupcake Cafe also now has two locations. Even with expansions, these places have retained their boutique appeal.

But Crumbs , which started in 2003 with a single store on the Upper West Side, is expanding more aggressively, with 40 planned stores over the next year and 150 within the next five years. (All self-financed.)

This kind of growth brings to mind the tale of Krispy Kreme , another sweet phenomenon that went national very fast. It, too, offered a nostalgic dessert at premium prices, with lines around the block and fawning press coverage. Krispy Kreme went public in 2000 and was a high-flying stock that confounded analysts with its market appeal , rising even as the dot-com bubble burst.

Krispy Kreme quickly came down to earth, through dilution of the brand and mismanagement . And finally, another indignity — the glazed donuts were transformed into Krispy Kreme bacon cheeseburgers .

Mia and Josh Bauer, the couple who opened up Crumbs, see Krispy Kreme as a cautionary tale. “We look at them all the time,” Ms. Bauer said. “We don’t want to make the same mistakes by overexpanding.”

“I was a fanatic when they opened up,” she said. “They pirated themselves by overexpanding and the quality dropped immediately. Their choices were not the greatest. You could get them in the gas stations.”

There are now several Crumbs shops in New York and two in Los Angeles.

“We will expand to places where there is a demand,” Ms. Bauer said. “We want to be very careful and strategic and not to expand too quickly.”

One sign of demand is the large volume of requests that Crumbs gets for shipping. (Last year, it stopped shipping until it could come up with a better process.)

Is there enough demand for premium-priced cupcakes to warrant this much expansion? Or is the cupcake just another food fad? (The Atkins Diet, for example, broadsided Krispy Kreme , though now the Atkins Diet has receded from view.)

Even now, the cupcake appears to be at a tipping point . There are signs of a cupcake backlash — both from schools concerned about childhood obesity and from foodies who can only maintain nostalgia for so long.

Thanks Angela. :)

Cupcakes For A Cause

PUNTA GORDA – One local business owner is raising money for Louisiana hurricane victims in a very unconventional way. But, her contributions are made in a very conventional oven.

Owner Cindee Murphy of Pies and Plates hopes to give away thousands of cupcakes this week in return for hurricane relief donations.

"We just have so much empathy for the folks there," says Murphy

Murphy’s business was nearly destroyed by Hurricane Charley in 2004.

"It looked like a tornado had come through, but it was a hurricane," says Murphy.

Later this month, she’ll testify before Congress about creating tax-free disaster funds for owners like herself.

"Having immediate funds available is just critical for us to take care of our staff and business," she says.

Her customers remember her struggle and are supporting her efforts.

"We know too well what the damage occurs when a hurricane comes through ur community," says Claudia Sanchez.

Knowing that someone will be there with sweet relief, makes all the difference.

"The help of everybody in the community that’s what gets you through really, that’s what gets you through," says Sanchez.

You can donate all week at Pies and Plates or through your local American Red Cross chapter.

Mark-Paul Gosselaar was ‘Raising the Bar’ with these cupcakes.

Posted by on Thursday, August 28th, 2008

Aggghhh! Zack Attack! Mark-Paul Gosselaar dropped by this morning to tell us all about his new series Raising the Bar (premiering Monday night), in which he’ll play a public defender with plenty of heart, hair. Mandi’s dutifully compiling a sure-to-be-amusing Mark-Paul Through the Years gallery that’ll post on Monday. Meanwhile, let’s talk about how his awesome TNT publicist (and PopWatch reader — hello again!) Susan brought a dozen obscenely oversized cupcakes for all of us aging Saved by the Bell superfans to graze on. This worked out perfectly, because I’m not allowed to eat obscenely oversized cupcakes unless a dreamy ’90s high school TV icon feeds them to me. What are the odds? Mandi would like to point out how EW’s various awards for “excellence” appropriately serve as a backdrop for a photo of two loons eating cupcakes.

Yesterday, Zack’s impending Attack had a bunch of us attempting to out-Saved by the Bell trivia each other in the hallway. Tim Stack absolutely won, nonchalantly name-dropping the duck killed by the oil spill near Bayside’s football field in an emotionally charged impression of Zack Morris cradling said duck: “Don’t worry, Becky. You’re where the oil can’t hurt you now.”

Dear lord. What’s the weirdest thing you remember from SBTB?

CUPCAKES ARE HOTTER THAN HOTCAKES: and red velvet tops my list…
By Meridith Ford | Wednesday, August 27, 2008, 01:18 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

How wonderful to open this month’s Bon Appetit to find Buttersweet Bakery in Hapeville featured.

The little bakery that could, Buttersweet owner Charlita Varner’s Key lime cupcake with cream cheese frosting is featured in a piece that’s all about the best of the bake shops across the United States. Atlanta is home to lots of “cupcakeries,” where smallish is best and flavors from funky monkey to plain old vanilla will make every day seem like your birthday.

Here are five spots that bake up cupcakes better than best:

Buttersweet Bakery’s red velvet cupcake is the moistest, reddest, most luscious version of this Southern favorite ever.

Little Cake Bakery in Buckhead’s chocolate cupcake with sweet chocolate frosting has the old-fashioned buttery goodness of something homemade, but with pretty, fat swirls of chocolate frosting and fairy-like sprinkles.

Sweet Pockets Cupcakes’ (Old Fourth Ward) lemon cupcake with velvety lemon frosting is a hands-down best alternative to chocolate and vanilla.

Atlanta Cupcake Factory makes a mean “sugar cookie dulce de leche” that’s sweet enough to make your teeth hurt. My only complaint about this place is that every time I go by, they’re never open. Dang.

Order Sugar Mama’s toasted coconut cupcake filled with vanilla cream and expect to get a creamy, dreamy sugar rush.

Who bakes your favorite cupcake? (and don’t say your mom…)

NO Cupcakes?!

Posted by on Thursday, August 21st, 2008

”If we had said, ‘no cupcakes,’ I think, for our community, that would have been tough,” said Lynn Cheddar, the elementary school’s assistant principal and the head of the district’s wellness committee.

All of Pennsylvania’s 501 school districts must have rules in place that promote good health. Last year, the state dangled a carrot — additional federal school lunch funds — to those that set certain nutritional goals, one of which is the discouragement of food as a reward.

“Forget that Middle East skirmish and all that stuff with tanks in Georgia. In Hollywood, battle lines have been drawn over something really serious. Yep, we’re referring to the great cupcake kerfuffle. Seems the celeb favorite Sprinkles Cupcakes is really frosted. The SoCal bakery just filed a federal lawsuit against Famous Cupcakes accusing its rival of swiping Sprinkles’ signature circles-and-dots cupcake decor by putting dots on its Web site.

We never thought we’d say this, but we feel sorry the lawyers. Years of law school and now they’re arguing polka dots.”

Laid off structured finance pros look for new work
Posted Aug 17th 2008 9:40AM by Zac Bissonnette

Bloomberg reports on the career struggles of former structured finance professionals who have now found themselves unceremoniously dumped on the street as the products they built wreak havoc on the global economy. According to Bloomberg, the investment world has shed 76,670 in the past year.

One former vice president in credit strategy at Bear Stearns is setting up her own company to provide birthday parties and cupcake cooking lessons for children. A Bank of New York asset backed securities trader has left the world of high finance to open a discount hair salon with his wife. Others are becoming teachers.

I’m not sure how I feel about this. Can’t these washed up masters of the universe just collect unemployment and live off their investments, and leave the world alone? They’ve already crashed the housing market and led to hundreds of billions in write downs. Now they’re going to go mess with cupcakes? Is nothing sacred?

We can take some comfort in the fact that they’re taking a pay cut. Wall Street salaries averaged $399,360 in 2007. That’s a lot of cupcakes and $12 haircuts.
